Overview

Ford redesigned the F-150 pickup truck for 2004; since then, the model lineup has expanded with new trim levels, variations and specialty models, featuring subtle improvements in the exterior and interior. For 2008, several new options and packages have been added. The full-size F-150 truck competes with the Chevrolet Silverado, Dodge Ram and Toyota Tundra pickups. The Ford F-150 will continue to be one of America's most popular new vehicles to be sold.

Five trim levels are offered: XL, STX, XLT, FX4 and Lariat, in regular cab, super cab and super crew body styles. Also available are the special King Ranch and Harley Davidson packages. A new Lariat package, Lariat Limited, features 22-inch wheels, a billet-style grille, stainless steel running boards and exclusive upholstery.

Under the Hood

The F-150 comes with three engine choices: a standard 4.2-liter V-6 that produces 202 horsepower; a 4.6-liter V-8 that produces 231 horsepower; and an optional 5.4-liter V-8 with an output of 300 horsepower. The V-6 comes standard with a five-speed manual; all other variants are equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel-drive models have a floor-mounted transfer case lever that permits shifting in and out of 4WD High on the move. A dashboard switch activates an optional electrically engaged transfer case. All F-150 trim levels (except the FX4) and body styles may be equipped as either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.

Handsome Exterior

Some F-150 styling touches are borrowed from Ford's handsome super duty pickups, particularly the downward drop in the forward door windows, the high beltline, square nose  and  large big-rig grille opening. The front fascia stylishly wraps around the fenders. The body side and cargo box sheet metal are chiseled, through to the tailgate, making the F-150 look upscale and appealing. The F-150 grilles are trapezoidal; the Lariat trim level receives a chrome surround and honeycomb insert.

A cargo management system is available with a 6.5-foot styleside bed. The regular F-150s have 6.5- and 8-foot beds, while the super cab (extended cab) can have a 5.5-, 6.5- or 8-foot cargo bed. The super crew is only available with a 5.5-foot bed. Short beds are available with flared fenders called flareside; otherwise, the bed is a slab-sided (styleside design). Super cab models can have a shorter, 5.5-foot cargo bed. Regular cabs and super cabs have narrow rear-hinged back doors; the F-150 wears 17- or 18-inch wheels.

Functional cabin

At every level, attention to detail makes this truck pleasant to own and operate. Giant exterior mirrors allow an excellent rearward view; a set of overhead storage bins snap into rails; five different sets of bins are available, as well as overhead entertainment systems and other specialty items for this rail system. The F-150 interior varies according to the series and can be outfitted depending on how much one wants to spend. Seats are supportive and comfortable; the front bench is split three ways (optional dual captain's chairs can be installed); the center section flips down to reveal a console with storage and cup holders. The super cab adds a three-place rear seat. Lariat Limited models include two-tone leather seats and leather-trimmed interior pieces.

A new optional rearview camera is mounted in the tailgate handle and helps to hook up a trailer. The system automatically activates when the vehicle is put into reverse. A DVD-based navigation system is available.

Driving Impressions

The F-150 has a heavy, solid feel. It comes in a wide range of models, with well-balanced suspensions and comfortable cabs that make them a pleasure to drive. They offer a quiet and refined ride over most surfaces, with controlled handling and minimum body roll on corners. The steering is responsive for cornering and these trucks track like a laser beam on the highway. Brakes are smooth and responsive. The big 5.4-liter V-8 is smooth and quiet, and delivers quick acceleration. It is rated at 300 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque, and provides fuel efficiency of 15/19 mpg (city/highway). The 4.6-liter V-8 and 4.2-liter, V-6 engines also perform well.

Safety features

Safety features that come standard include dual frontal air bags designed to deploy according to the severity of the crash. Seatbelts are equipped with pretensioners and energy-management retractors. The F-150 earned a five-star safety rating from NHTSA in government frontal crash testing; and a Good rating in offset crash testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
